The rumors we've all read about Tony Stewart's car number and team sponsors when he joins Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009 seem to be working themselves true.As The Charlotte Observer puts it, "multiple sources" are saying early this week that Stewart will definitely be in the No. 14 car and it will carry sponsorship from Office Depot and Old Spice:
Tony Stewart will drive the No. 14 Chevrolet in his debut next season with his own Sprint Cup Series team, Stewart-Haas Racing, and will share sponsorship from Office Depot and Old Spice, the Observer has learned.Announcing everything would obviously be a feel-good story for Stewart in his home state of Indiana at the track that he likely never stops thinking about.
A formal announcement of Stewart's car number and sponsorship plans will be made this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, multiple sources said Monday.
The two-time
Ryan Newman, who got his release from Penske Racing last week, hasn't been signed by Stewart-Haas yet according to the report, with it saying that he is mulling an offer from Gillette-Evernham Motorsports.
While we don't know the veracity of that, it muddies the water in Ray Evernham's Dodge operation because signing Newman would have to mean either Patrick Carpentier or Elliott Sadler would be out of a ride -- both guys that most would figure to be locks for returning in 2009.
But before we dig into that any deeper, again, expect an announcement this weekend at Indianapolis regarding some details of Stewart's new team. As for the team's second driver? It doesn't seem like that will happen -- quite yet.

First off,. i'd be suprised if Ryan went to GEM,. but as Chevy wanted to get Tony back in their camp, maybe Dodge would like to keep Ryan in theirs as well. I have to say,. if they do land Ryan, i dont see them starting a new team, and Elliott just signed a long term extension, and GEM is about to pull Patrick from the 10 car at Pocono so he can focus on the Montreal Nationwide race in a couple weeks, but it's only for Pocono, but if they are willing to pull him for that race, i think if they could land a top free agent, they'd move Patrick out of the car next season. Now, if they did, i wouldnt be suprised if they put Patrick and move him to Nationwide to get a little more seat time and experience, as they are offering to do for Dario at Ganassi, and maybe even split a full time Nationwide ride between Carpentier and Chase Miller next year, and then whoever performed the best, they might start a fourth team with in 2010.
If Newman does go to GEM,. then i predict Truex will be in line to team up with Stewart, and with the ties to Hendrick, it indirectly puts Dale Jr and Truex Jr in a connection again, although i think Reed Sorenson would be a guy that Stewart Haas could build a team around.
Although i like the number 14 alot better than the number 70, i still liked it when Sterlin Marlin drove it a couple years ago. im not sure if they'll keep the 66 or not, it really depends on the sponsor. I know that if they land UPS, they like the double numbers and that is what the 66 is, although the number 44 is a better match to go with the 14, but i dont know if Waltrip would let it go with UPS, or if he keeps it for himself. I can tell you, im fairly sure that Scott Riggs will be out of a ride, and i really hate that, but dont blame that either. Ive heard rumors of maybe he'd be an option for Petty Enterprises, and they do have some positives things in line with their new investors, which both could move Riggs and Petty's from rock bottom at the same time, but maybe he should consider going back to the Nationwide or Truck series as it's worked out for guys such as Johnny Benson, Todd Bodine, Ron Hornaday, and Mike Skinner.
Also, i have to say, Office Depot may have lost out of the sweepstakes of keeping Carl Edwards, but i think they are getting a better deal with Tony Stewart.

I'LL BE GLAD IF newmann or truex ends up driving for tony.
1 gots a plenty of experience, the other is still young and has a big will to win races and a champ. but i may be daydreaming until TONY gets those teams going and in shape.
Other drivers wherever they go is just as fine as their previous teams.
MIKE / SUSAN, please go read my 46 post in the: TOYOTA PACKAGE GETTING CHECKED BY NASCAR. Ithink i owe you one. Hasta la vista.

Hey CJ:
My hubby is a UPSer. He has worked for them for over ten years. The word around the "shop" is that UPS is looking to move from MWR. The only reason they went with MWR in the first place was because of their legience to Dale Jarrett. They (UPS) is happy with Ruitimann (Sp?) as he portrays the attitude that they like for their company, but from what we hear, they aren't indebted to Reuitimann or to MWR. In fact, hubby heard that due to the huge amount of money that UPS spends in NASCAR, they are really wanting to go with a more prominant team/driver and are interested in a deal with Chevy as they didn't have huge success with Ford and are having no success with Toyota.
So to make a long story short, if the shop talk is true, it is looking like the possibility of a UPS sponsored Stewart/HAAS team just might become a reality. :-) I for one would love to see that! I also like Reuitimann so wouldn't mind seeing him drive for Tony. I think in a more competetive car and with a more competetive team, David could be a much bigger success. I agree with you too, Newman going to Gillette Everhnam would be a mistake.
This is all so exciting! I can't wait to see how it plays out.
Kim
P.S. I am also a fan of Reed Sorenson and would love to see him with a more successful team. I for one think he is just adorable. I think the talent is there, too just underutilized. It doesn't hurt either that I have a son named, Reid. :-)

I have to say Kim, i was really hoping that UPS would go with Childress and i think Bowyer and UPS would have been a pretty good fit, but dont hear very often of sponsors leaving before their contract is up and Jack Daniels and Direct TV seem pretty content at where they are at with Clint and RCR. Im not really sold on David Reutimann as a driver in Sprint Cup Series. I think he took advantage of a opportunity of MWR able to move up to Cup because of Toyota being so anxious to get to the Cup series and no other top organizations available at the time. He's pretty good in Nationwide and when he was in the Truck series, but even with better equipment, i dont see him as a Chase contender and competiting for wins. As i said, i dont blame UPS for leaving, but i think that they are putting themselves in a same situation as they did in the one they are now, joining a driver that is pursuing a new venture in owning and granted Tony Stewart is alot better in comparison to Mikey Waltrip, but joining Tony Stewart's team, with Tony NOT driving for your sponsor, going to put them on the same level as what FedEx is accomplishing with Gibbs, but it is a step up from MWR, and i dont know if Newman necessarily is a good fit with UPS, but i think Office Depot and UPS will fit pretty well together.
